Birth and Early Life
Sambhaji Maharaj was born on 14 May 1657 at Purandar Fort.
He was the son of the great king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Saibai.
From a young age:
He was very intelligent and bold
He learned warfare, administration, and multiple languages
He grew up watching his father build Swarajya (self-rule)
Shivaji Maharaj’s Capture and Smart Escape (Important Truth)
In 1666, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and young Sambhaji Maharaj went to meet the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb in Agra.

Shivaji Maharaj was insulted and placed under house arrest
Sambhaji Maharaj (just a child) was also kept with him
The Great Escape Plan
Shivaji Maharaj made a brilliant plan:
He pretended to be sick
Daily, large baskets of sweets and fruits were sent out as charity
Guards became used to this routine
👉 One day:
Shivaji Maharaj and Sambhaji Maharaj hid inside the baskets
They were quietly carried out
They escaped safely from Agra
This is known as one of the smartest escapes in history
👑 Becoming the King
After Shivaji Maharaj’s death in 1680, Sambhaji Maharaj became the ruler in 1681.
👉 He took responsibility during a very dangerous time when the Mughal empire was attacking strongly.
War Against Aurangzeb
Aurangzeb personally came to the Deccan to destroy the Maratha Empire.
What did Sambhaji Maharaj do?
Fought continuously for 9 years
Attacked Mughal forces with speed and strategy
Protected forts and Swarajya bravely
👉 He never surrendered, even when the enemy was much stronger.
Capture of Sambhaji Maharaj (Real Event)
In 1689, Sambhaji Maharaj was captured at Sangameshwar.
He was caught due to betrayal by enemies
He was taken to Aurangzeb’s court
Refusal to Bow
Aurangzeb offered him:
👉 “Accept Islam and surrender, and you will be spared.”
Sambhaji Maharaj’s reply:
👉 He refused completely
👉 He chose honor, Dharma, and self-respect over life
Supreme Sacrifice
Sambhaji Maharaj was tortured brutally for many days.
He faced extreme pain
But he did not give up his faith
He did not beg for mercy
He attained martyrdom on 11 March 1689
