π A Child Born for a Great Purpose (1630)
On 19 February 1630, inside the strong hill fort of
Shivneri Fort,
a child was born who would change the history of India forever.
He was named Shivaji Maharaj.
His mother, Jijabai, was a woman of great courage and faith. She raised Shivaji Maharaj with stories from the Ramayana and Mahabharata, teaching him values of truth, bravery, and justice.
His father, Shahaji Bhosale, was a skilled warrior. But it was Jijabai who shaped young Shivaji Maharajβs character.
From a young age, Shivaji Maharaj dreamed of one thing:
π Swarajya β a kingdom of self-rule where people could live with dignity.
π§ The Oath of Swarajya (1645)
At the age of about 15, in 1645, Shivaji Maharaj gathered his close friends at
Raireshwar Temple.
There, Shivaji Maharaj took a powerful oath:
π βWe will create Swarajya.β
At that time:
The Mughal Empire ruled the north
The Adilshahi Sultanate ruled the Deccan
For a young Shivaji Maharaj to dream of independence was extraordinary.
π° The First Step β Capturing Torna (1646)
In 1646, at just 16 years old, Shivaji Maharaj captured his first fort:
Torna Fort.
This was the beginning of Swarajya.
Soon, Shivaji Maharaj captured more forts like:
Rajgad Fort
Kondhana Fort
Purandar Fort
Instead of large armies, Shivaji Maharaj used:

Shivaji Maharajβs growing power worried Bijapur. The Sultan sent
Afzal Khan to defeat him.

Afzal Khan invited Shivaji Maharaj for a meetingβbut it was a trap.
Shivaji Maharaj came prepared.
When Afzal Khan attacked, Shivaji Maharaj defended himself using the Wagh Nakh.

Surat.
This was a smart move:
To weaken Mughal power
To gather wealth for Swarajya

In 1666, Mughal emperor
Aurangzeb
invited Shivaji Maharaj to
Agra.
But he placed Shivaji Maharaj under watch.
Then something amazing happened:
Shivaji Maharaj escaped by hiding in baskets
Returned safely to Maharashtra

Shivaji Maharaj was crowned:

This marked the beginning of the Maratha Empire.
As a king, Shivaji Maharaj:

Shivaji Maharaj believed in:
Respect for women
Protection of all religions
Fair justice
Many people from different communities worked under Shivaji Maharaj.
The End of a Great Life (1680)

His Legacy
Shivaji Maharaj showed that:
