The Story of Karna
Birth of Karna
Before her marriage, Princess Kunti received a divine mantra from Sage Durvasa.
The mantra allowed her to invoke any god and receive a child from that deity.
Out of curiosity, Kunti invoked Surya Deva (the Sun God).
As a result:
👉 Karna was born.
He was born with:
Divine armor (Kavacha)
Golden earrings (Kundala)
These were natural protections given at birth.
Kunti was unmarried at that time and feared society’s judgment.
In sorrow and fear:
👉 She placed the baby in a basket and set him afloat on the river.
This became the beginning of Karna’s tragic destiny.
Raised by Adhiratha and Radha
The basket was found by:
Adhiratha, the charioteer (Suta) of King Dhritarashtra
His wife Radha
They had no children and lovingly raised Karna as their own son.
Thus:
👉 Karna became known as Radheya (son of Radha)
Though born divine, he grew up in a humble household.
From childhood:
He was brave
Kind-hearted
Hardworking
Extremely talented in archery
But society judged him by birth, not by ability.
Karna’s Dream of Becoming a Great Warrior
Karna had only one great dream:
👉 To become the greatest archer in the world.
He admired Arjuna deeply but also wished to surpass him.
However:
He was often insulted for being a Suta-putra (charioteer’s son)
Many teachers refused to train him
Still, he never gave up.
His determination became one of his greatest strengths.
Learning from Parashurama
To gain supreme knowledge of weapons, Karna approached Lord Parashurama.
Parashurama taught only Brahmins.
So Karna hid his true identity and said he was a Brahmin.
Impressed by his discipline, Parashurama accepted him.
Karna became a master of:
Divine weapons
Warfare
Strategy
Archery
But fate soon turned.
The Curse of Parashurama
One day, while Parashurama was resting with his head on Karna’s lap, an insect bit Karna deeply.
Blood flowed, but Karna did not move because he did not want to disturb his guru.
When Parashurama awoke, he realized:
👉 No ordinary Brahmin could bear such pain silently.
He understood Karna had lied.
Angered, he cursed Karna:
👉 “At the most important moment of battle, you will forget the knowledge of divine weapons.”
This curse later changed the course of the Mahabharata.
Humiliation in the Arena
At the public display of martial skills by the Kuru princes:
Arjuna showed extraordinary archery
Karna stepped forward and challenged him
The crowd was shocked.
But Kripacharya asked:
👉 “Tell us your royal lineage first.”
Because only a prince could challenge Arjuna officially.
When Karna could not answer, he was insulted and humiliated.
This became one of the deepest wounds of his life.
Duryodhana’s Friendship
At that moment, Duryodhana stood up.
He declared:
👉 “If Karna is not a king, I make him one now.”
He immediately made Karna the King of Anga.
For the first time:
👉 Someone respected Karna without judging his birth.
Karna was deeply moved.
He promised lifelong loyalty to Duryodhana.
This friendship became central to his life.
Karna’s Generosity
Karna became famous for unmatched charity.
He was known as:
👉 Daanveer Karna
He never refused anyone who asked for help.
He gave away:
Wealth
Gold
Jewels
Land
Even personal protection
His generosity became legendary across Bharat.
Indra Takes the Kavacha and Kundala
Indra, father of Arjuna, feared Karna’s invincibility.
Disguised as a Brahmin, he came to ask for Karna’s divine armor and earrings.
Karna knew the truth.
Still:
👉 He gave them away willingly.
He cut off his own Kavacha and Kundala and donated them.
Impressed, Indra gave him:
👉 Vasavi Shakti — a divine weapon that could be used only once.
This showed Karna’s greatness beyond warfare.
The Curse of the Brahmin
Once, while practicing archery, Karna accidentally killed a Brahmin’s cow.
The grieving Brahmin cursed him:
👉 “Just as my helpless cow died, your chariot wheel will sink into the earth in your most helpless moment.”
This second curse also became important later.
Kunti Reveals the Truth
Before the Kurukshetra war, Kunti met Karna privately.
She revealed:
👉 “You are my firstborn son.”
This meant:
Yudhishthira
Bhima
Arjuna
Nakula
Sahadeva
were his younger brothers.
She asked him to join the Pandavas.
But Karna replied:
👉 “I cannot betray Duryodhana, who stood by me when the world rejected me.”
Still, he promised:
👉 He would not kill any Pandava except Arjuna.
This shows Karna’s loyalty and inner conflict.
Karna in the Mahabharata War
Karna fought for the Kauravas in the Kurukshetra war.
He showed:
Extraordinary courage
Great military skill
Fearless leadership
He killed many great warriors and became one of the strongest pillars of Duryodhana’s army.
He also used Vasavi Shakti to kill Ghatotkacha, saving the Kaurava army.
This meant he no longer had that divine weapon against Arjuna.
Karna vs Arjuna
The final great battle came:
👉 Karna vs Arjuna
This was one of the greatest duels in the Mahabharata.
During battle:
Karna fought brilliantly
His chariot wheel got stuck in the ground (because of the curse)
He forgot the mantras of divine weapons (because of Parashurama’s curse)
At that moment, Krishna reminded Arjuna of Karna’s role in Draupadi’s humiliation and Abhimanyu’s death.
Arjuna released the final arrow.
👉 Karna fell on the battlefield.
He died as one of the greatest warriors in history.
Truth Revealed After Death
After the war, Kunti revealed the truth to the Pandavas:
👉 Karna was their elder brother.
They were shocked and filled with sorrow.
Yudhishthira especially grieved deeply.
The Pandavas realized they had fought and killed their own blood.
This became one of the greatest tragedies of the Mahabharata.
