The Story of Lord Rama and Sita’s Vanvas Journey
The Story of Lord Rama and Sita’s Vanvas Journey
(Based on Valmiki Ramayana – Ayodhya Kanda, Aranya Kanda, Kishkindha Kanda, Sundara Kanda, and Yuddha Kanda)
Birth of Lord Rama
Lord Rama was born in Ayodhya to King Dasharatha and Queen Kausalya.
He was the eldest among the four princes:
Rama
Bharata
Lakumshana (Lakshmana)
Shatrughna
From childhood:
Rama was calm, disciplined, and truthful
He mastered archery, warfare, and royal duties
He was loved by the people for his compassion and humility
He is remembered as Maryada Purushottama — the ideal man who always followed Dharma.
Marriage of Rama and Sita
In Mithila, King Janaka had found a divine baby girl while ploughing the earth.
She was named Sita.
She was known for:
Purity
Courage
Wisdom
Devotion
King Janaka arranged a Swayamvara.
He declared:
👉 Whoever could lift and string Lord Shiva’s great bow would marry Sita.
What happened?
Many kings failed
Rama lifted the bow with ease
While stringing it, the bow broke with a thunderous sound
Thus Rama and Sita were married.
This event is described in Bala Kanda of Valmiki Ramayana.
Dasharatha Decides to Crown Rama
As King Dasharatha grew old, he decided:
👉 Rama should become the next king of Ayodhya.
The entire kingdom celebrated.
Everyone was happy because Rama was loved by all.
But at that moment, a major turn happened.
Kaikeyi’s Two Boons (Historical Event)
Long ago, Queen Kaikeyi had once saved Dasharatha in battle.
At that time, Dasharatha had promised her:
👉 “I will grant you two boons whenever you ask.”
Now, influenced by her maid Manthara, Kaikeyi asked for:
Bharata to be crowned king
Rama to be sent to the forest for 14 years
Dasharatha was shattered.
He did not want this, but as a king, he could not break his promise.
Rama Accepts Vanvas
When Rama heard this, he did not become angry.
Instead, he said:
👉 A father’s promise must be protected.
He willingly gave up:
The throne
Royal comfort
Palace life
and accepted exile for 14 years.
This is one of the greatest examples of Dharma in Indian history.
Sita and Lakshmana Join Rama
When Rama prepared to leave:
Sita said:
👉 “A wife must stay with her husband in joy and sorrow.”
She insisted on going with him.
Lakshmana also said:
👉 “I will serve and protect you both.”
Thus, all three left Ayodhya:
Rama
Sita
Lakshmana
The people of Ayodhya cried deeply.
King Dasharatha could not bear the sorrow.
Soon after Rama left, Dasharatha passed away in grief.
Bharata Refuses the Throne
When Bharata returned and learned what happened:
He was deeply shocked
He refused to accept the kingdom
He blamed Kaikeyi for her actions
He went to the forest to bring Rama back.
But Rama refused because:
👉 “A promise once given must be completed.”
Then Bharata placed Rama’s sandals (Paduka) on the throne and ruled Ayodhya as Rama’s representative.
This is called Paduka Pattabhisheka.
Life During Vanvas
Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana lived in forests like:
Chitrakoot
Dandakaranya
Panchavati
During exile:
Rama protected sages from Rakshasas
Lakshmana guarded them day and night
Sita supported them with patience and strength
They lived simply, wearing bark clothes and living like forest dwellers.
Surpanakha and the Golden Deer
In Panchavati, Ravana’s sister Surpanakha approached Rama.
After events involving her insult and Lakshmana cutting her nose, she went to Ravana and spoke about Sita.
Ravana became determined to abduct Sita.
He made a plan using Maricha, who took the form of a golden deer.
Sita admired the deer and asked Rama to bring it.
Rama went after it.
Then Ravana came disguised as a sage.
He kidnapped Sita and took her to Lanka.
This became the turning point of the Ramayana.
Search for Sita
Rama and Lakshmana searched everywhere.
They met:
Hanuman
Sugriva
The Vanara army
Hanuman became Rama’s greatest devotee.
He crossed the ocean and found Sita in Ashoka Vatika in Lanka.
He gave Rama’s ring to Sita as proof.
This gave hope to both Rama and Sita.
War Against Ravana
Rama built Ram Setu across the sea with the help of the Vanara Sena.
A great war followed.
What happened?
Ravana’s mighty warriors were defeated
Lakshmana defeated Indrajit
Hanuman showed unmatched bravery
Finally, Rama killed Ravana
Thus:
👉 Dharma defeated Adharma
This is the central victory of the Ramayana.
Return to Ayodhya
After completing 14 years of exile:
Rama
Sita
Lakshmana
returned to Ayodhya.
The people welcomed them by lighting lamps everywhere.
This celebration is remembered as Diwali.
Rama was crowned king, and Rama Rajya began — a kingdom of justice, peace, and righteousness.
Why Rama and Sita Are Remembered
