The First Great Empire of Ancient India(Maurya Empire)
Beginning of the Maurya Empire
The Maurya Empire was one of the largest and most powerful empires in ancient India.
It was founded by Chandragupta Maurya around 322 BCE.
π With the guidance of his wise teacher Chanakya (also called Kautilya), he built a strong kingdom.
βοΈ Rise of Chandragupta Maurya
Chandragupta started as a young boy with big dreams
He was trained by Chanakya in war, politics, and leadership
Together, they defeated the powerful Nanda dynasty
π He then established the Maurya Empire with its capital at Pataliputra (modern Patna).
A Strong and Organized Kingdom
Chandragupta Maurya created a powerful administration system:
Large and disciplined army
Efficient tax system
Well-organized government departments
π His rule brought order, safety, and prosperity.
π€ Deal with the Greeks
After Alexander the Great left India, his general Seleucus I Nicator tried to capture Indian lands.
π Chandragupta defeated him and made a treaty:
Gained more territory
Strengthened his empire
Rule of Bindusara
After Chandragupta, his son Bindusara became king.
He expanded the empire further into southern India
Maintained peace and stability
π The Great Emperor Ashoka
The most famous ruler of the Maurya Empire was Ashoka.

One of the most important events was the Kalinga War (around 261 BCE).
Ashoka fought a terrible war against Kalinga
Thousands of people were killed
π Seeing the destruction, Ashoka felt deep sorrow

After the war:
Ashoka decided to give up violence
He followed Buddhism
He spread the message of peace and kindness

Ashokaβs Teachings
Ashoka spread his ideas through rock edicts (inscriptions) across India.
He taught:
Respect for all religions
Kindness to people and animals
Importance of truth and non-violence
Golden Age of the Maurya Empire
Under the Mauryas:
Trade and agriculture grew
Roads and cities were developed
Art and culture flourished

Decline of the Empire
After Ashokaβs death:
Weak rulers followed
The empire slowly became weaker
Finally, it came to an end around 185 BCE
