Hota Jiva mhanun vachla Shiva.
Afzal Khan was tall, powerful, and known for his cunning. He invited Shivaji Maharaj to meet him inside a tent at the foot of Pratapgad Fort. According to the agreement, both would come with only a few guards and no visible weapons.
But Afzal Khan had a secret plan.
As soon as he embraced Shivaji Maharaj, he suddenly attacked, trying to crush and stab him. Shivaji Maharaj was prepared — he wore hidden armor and defended himself bravely. A fierce struggle broke out.
Outside the tent, Afzal Khan’s bodyguard, Sayyed Banda, rushed forward with his sword to strike Shivaji Maharaj.
That moment could have changed history…
But standing nearby was Jiva Mahale — the loyal and fearless bodyguard of Shivaji Maharaj.
Without hesitation, Jiva Mahale leaped forward and blocked the attack. With lightning speed and unmatched courage, he fought Sayyed Banda and struck him down, saving Shivaji Maharaj’s life.
The battle ended with Afzal Khan defeated… and Shivaji Maharaj safe — all because of the bravery of one devoted warrior.
From that day, a famous line was remembered in history:
“Hota Jiva mhanun vachla Shiva.”
Because Jiva lived, Shiva survived
