The Brave Encounter — Shivaji Maharaj and Afzal Khan
Long ago, when India was full of mighty kingdoms and fierce warriors, there lived a brave and intelligent leader named Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
He dreamed of creating a land where people could live freely and safely. His courage and wisdom made him loved by his people — and feared by his enemies.
One of those enemies was a powerful general named Afzal Khan.
He was sent with a huge army to defeat Shivaji Maharaj and destroy his growing kingdom.
Afzal Khan was very strong and proud. He believed no one could defeat him. On his way, he destroyed temples and villages to scare Shivaji Maharaj into surrendering.
But Shivaji Maharaj was not afraid.
The Meeting at the Fort
Afzal Khan sent a message proposing peace.
He invited Shivaji Maharaj to meet him alone at the mighty Pratapgad Fort.
Many warned Shivaji Maharaj —
“Afzal Khan is dangerous. This could be a trap!”
But Shivaji Maharaj was wise.
He agreed to the meeting — but carefully prepared.
He wore hidden armor under his clothes.
On his fingers, he wore a special weapon called Wagh Nakh (tiger claws).
He also carried a small dagger hidden in his sleeve.
The Treacherous Attack
When the two leaders met, Afzal Khan smiled and embraced Shivaji Maharaj — pretending friendship.
But suddenly…
Afzal Khan tried to crush Shivaji Maharaj and stab him!
He had planned to kill him in the hug.
But Shivaji Maharaj was ready.
Quick as lightning, he used the Wagh Nakh to strike Afzal Khan and defended himself. A fierce struggle followed — and Shivaji Maharaj escaped safely.
Outside, Shivaji Maharaj’s loyal soldiers attacked Afzal Khan’s army and defeated them.
The powerful general who came to destroy Shivaji Maharaj was defeated instead.
Victory of Courage and Intelligence
This victory became one of the most famous moments in history.
It showed the world that:
Intelligence is stronger than brute strength
Preparation wins battles
Courage protects freedom
Shivaji Maharaj proved that a true leader fights not just with weapons — but with wisdom.
